Back in 2021, when I took over purchasing for a 30-person earthworks company, I figured equipment requests would be straightforward. They weren't.
The question that comes up again and again isn't simply 'which brand should we rent?' It's a messy version of 'bulldozer vs. excavator vs. compactor—what do we actually need on this job?' I handle 60 to 80 equipment orders a year, and I report to both operations and finance, which means I get to justify every line item. I'm not an engineer, but I've read enough rental invoices and density test reports to know that the cheapest machine isn't always the least expensive one.
There's no universal answer. There's only a scenario. Let's walk through the main ones.

If you're building a wide road base, an industrial pad, or a big parking lot, you need a machine that can cover ground and put enough energy into the lift. A mid-size bulldozer can spread material, and an excavator can place it, but neither will meet a proctor density requirement by itself. This is where a dedicated compactor earns its keep.

The same model can have different drum options or an updated ROPS structure depending on the year. If you're buying or renting, ask the dealer to send the actual spec sheet for the exact serial number.
A quick note on the phrase 'gas pump.' A diesel compactor does not have a 'gas pump' in the way most people imagine. The engine has a fuel lift pump, sure, but the pump that matters most on a vibratory roller is the hydraulic pump. That's what powers the vibration. I've seen a small fuel pump issue send a crew chasing the wrong problem while the hydraulic system was slowly losing pressure. If someone tells you the gas pump is bad on a Hamm compactor, ask them to specify which pump first.

Scenario 2: Tight access and trench backfill
If the job is a utility repair, a small retaining wall, or a narrow trench, a 10-ton roller is not the answer. You probably need a walk-behind compactor or a plate compactor. No amount of brand preference will make a big roller fit into a 2-foot-wide excavation.
This is the scenario where people try to make an excavator do compaction work by using the bucket to tamp backfill. For a small pipe bedding repair, that might be okay. For a trench that has to carry traffic, it won't be. Keep the lifts thin, use the right-sized compactor, and you'll save yourself a call-back.
Scenario 3: You already have a bulldozer and an excavator on site
This is the classic 'bulldozer vs. excavator' mistake. It's tempting to think one of them can replace the other, or that either one can replace a compactor. They can't.
A bulldozer is made to push material and maintain grade over distance. An excavator is made to dig, lift, and place material. A dozer tracking back and forth will consolidate the top surface a little. An excavator bucket can tamp a spot. But neither creates the kind of uniform density you need under asphalt or a building slab.
The dozer-tracking advice ignores the difference between surface pressure and deep compaction. You can end up with a good-looking crust over soft ground. That only shows up later, when the proof roll fails or the slab cracks. If you absolutely have to use the machines you already have, keep lifts to 4 to 6 inches, run the dozer in overlapping passes, and proof-roll before any blind backfill. But don't call that compaction. Call it temporary.
Scenario 4: The surface is going to be seen by the client
Here's where quality becomes brand image. The final pass of a roller is the visual proof that a contractor knows what they're doing. A smooth, uniform surface makes the inspector, the owner, and the next potential customer feel like the whole project was done right. A rough, uneven surface tells them the opposite—even if the density numbers pass.
When we switched from an older general-duty roller to the Hamm 2210 on an asphalt job, the first comment wasn't from the crew. It was from the owner's rep: 'That surface is clean.' Nothing else had changed. Same mix, same crew, same temperature window. The machine changed the perceived quality. That's real, and it shows up in future bids.
The most frustrating part of equipment procurement is watching cheap rental rates turn into expensive rework. You'd think a machine that moves enough dirt would be enough. It isn't. The rental quote is a small line item compared to the cost of failing a density test.
How to decide which scenario you're in
Forget the brand debate for a second. Use this simple filter instead:
- Moving material over long distances? Bulldozer.
- Digging, loading, or placing material with precision? Excavator.
- Densifying material so it will stay put? Compactor.
If you need all three, then you need all three. The one most crews try to skip is the compactor, and that's usually the one that fails the test.
Also consider whether the final surface will be visible. If the client is going to stand on it or drive on it, don't save money on the wrong machine. The cost of a bad-looking surface shows up in tomorrow's bids, not just today's rework.
Rental rates in our market for a 10-ton tandem unit like the Hamm 2210 run roughly $4,000 to $5,500 per week (dealer quotes, Jan. 2025). A plate compactor is a few hundred dollars a day. That gap is easy to focus on. But a failed compaction test can cost more than the difference—sometimes before lunch.
Next time someone asks you bulldozer vs. excavator, stop and ask what the job needs first. Then answer the question. Matching equipment to scenario is not just efficient; it protects the reputation of the people whose name is on the trailer.
