The serial number also tells you which version of the parts catalog applies. Manufacturers update components during production. The same roller model from year one and year four can use different bearings, seals, filter heads, and mounts. Guessing based on the model name is how small repairs become expensive ones.

4. Price the total cost, not just the base part

I went back and forth on a drum seal kit once. The replacement was about 20 percent cheaper upfront.
