Learning the Operator Side: Becoming a Crane Operator
Your HAMM compactor just threw a bearing, and the asphalt pour is in 48 hours. Nobody on the crew cares that the machine ran fine yesterday. They're all looking at you.
I coordinate parts procurement for a heavy equipment dealership, and I've handled 200+ rush orders in 10 years — including same-day turnarounds for road crews that didn't have a minute to spare. This checklist is what actually works when a compactor goes down.
Six steps. Read them in order and follow them all, and you'll get the right parts delivered and installed with the least damage done. I'll also cover some common mistakes and a note on operator careers at the end.
The Six-Step Checklist
Step 1: Lock Down Exact Part Numbers Before You Call Anyone
When I first started doing this, I assumed aftermarket parts were basically the same as OEM. Three field failures later, I changed my mind. What I mean is: even the "right" part won't be right if you don't identify it precisely.
Get the serial number off your machine — not just the model. An HD+ 110 with an older engine can have different bearing specs than a 2023 unit. The serial plate is usually on the right side of the main frame or inside the engine compartment.
If you don't have a parts manual, call a dealer and read them the serial number before you describe anything else. The part number unlocks everything: price, availability, and whether it's superseded by a newer version.
Write down:
- Machine model and serial number
- Part number and quantity needed
- Seal kit number (order seals with every bearing job)
Step 2: Make the Genuine vs. Aftermarket Call Early
I have mixed feelings about aftermarket parts. On one hand, they cost less and sometimes hold up fine. On the other, when they fail, the savings evaporate fast. I've seen an aftermarket filter save $40 — and then kill a hydraulic pump that cost $4,200 to replace.
My rule on HAMM roller parts: go genuine for anything that rotates, seals, or controls the machine. Bearings, seals, hydraulic valves, filters — stay OEM. Aftermarket might be fine for wear pads or chute liners, but the parts that keep the drum vibrating? Genuine, no debate.
Here's the thing: the parts you install are a direct extension of your work. When a subpar bearing fails on a customer's site, they don't blame the part — they blame your company. Saving $200 on a part that costs you a client's trust is not a saving. I've seen contractors lose repeat business over exactly this.
Step 3: Source From Dealers Who Actually Have Stock
In July 2024, Rick Hamm — owner of Rick Hamm Construction in northwest Ohio, and yes, that's really his name — called at 6:30 AM. His HD+ 110 had a failed vibration bearing, and he had a lane closure scheduled in 36 hours. Missing that window meant a $50,000 penalty clause.
First dealer I called: three weeks out. Second dealer: two weeks. Third dealer, in Indianapolis: the bearing was on the shelf. We confirmed the part number twice by email, arranged pick-up, and had it in Rick's yard by 2 PM that day. He lost one day instead of three weeks.
The lesson: don't stop at the first dealer. Call three. Ask three questions — do you have it, which location, and can you confirm the part number in writing. Email confirmation is fine.
One more thing on this step: if you run a rental fleet, maintain a spreadsheet of which machine has which serial number. You'd think that's obvious, but you'd be surprised how many fleet managers spend a full day searching for a serial plate that's been painted over three times.
Step 4: Do the Shipping Math — Actually Write It Out
Ground shipping on a bearing might cost $15 and take four days. Expedited air could be $90 and take one day. If your compactor earns $300 per hour on a job, that difference isn't worth debating. Write down the machine's daily rental or billing rate, then compare it to the freight quote. It makes the decision obvious.
If I remember correctly, the freight on Rick's bearing was around $180 — don't quote me on the exact number, it might have been slightly more or less. On top of the $420 part cost. Was it worth it? Absolutely. His alternative was a missed lane closure and a penalty clause that made the freight bill look like pocket change.
At least, that's been my experience with deadline-critical paving work.
Step 5: Inspect the Parts the Moment They Arrive
One of my biggest regrets: in 2022, I didn't open the box on a "verified" shipment. The label said HD+ 110 bearing, but the part inside was for an older generation. The machine sat another 48 hours before we caught it.
The vendor was apologetic. Didn't change the outcome. The crew missed their window, and the client had to reschedule the pour.
When your parts land:
- Open the packaging — don't just read the label
- Match the part number to your original order
- Check seals and gaskets for damage
- Check for surface rust, dents, or anything unusual
Step 6: Install Using the Right Tools and Torque Specs
Don't rely on memory. Use the service manual's torque specs and procedures. For bearings, use a proper press. A hammer might get it in, but it can damage the race and the bearing will fail early. (Not that I've never seen a hammer used. It was worse than expected, every time.)
This is also a good moment to check the rest of your equipment. If your crew does concrete work too, a dull concrete drill bit can shut down a dowel bar job just as fast as a broken roller. Look at your fleet's wear items together while you're in maintenance mode.
One more thing: how the machine is operated affects parts life. Those bucket golf competitions at equipment expos — where operators use excavators to drop golf balls into buckets — look like fun, but they teach precision. Smooth, deliberate operation keeps vibration mounts and bearings alive. Jerky, aggressive operation wears them out fast.
Take a photo of the old part before you install the new one. It helps with warranty claims and makes it easier to confirm you ordered the right match.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Some mistakes I keep seeing:
- Ordering by model name only. "It's an HD+ 110" — which year? Which engine? The serial number settles it.
- Skipping the seals. A new bearing with an old, damaged seal fails fast. Order seals with every bearing job.
- Accepting the first ETA. Unless the dealer confirms the part is on the shelf, the ETA is a guess. Ask for a location check and written confirmation.
- Choosing the cheapest freight option. When a compactor is down, the cheapest shipping is the most expensive decision in the room.
Learning the Operator Side: Becoming a Crane Operator
If you're part of a crew and thinking about career growth, becoming a crane operator is a well-defined path — different from running a compactor, but in the same world.
According to the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), certification requires passing both a written and practical exam for the crane type you intend to operate. OSHA's construction crane standard (29 CFR 1926.1427) requires certified or licensed operators. Some states add their own licensing on top of that — verify requirements at your state's labor department.
The typical route:
- Complete a training program (community college, union hall, or accredited private school)
- Log supervised seat time — most programs require a year or more under a certified operator
- Pass the NCCCO written and practical exams
- Maintain certification with periodic renewals
Crane operators are in steady demand — the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median annual wages above $60,000 for crane and tower operators (Source: bls.gov, 2023 data; verify current figures).
It takes time, but it's straightforward. And the same principle applies all the way through: quality training, quality parts, and quality habits build a reputation worth having.
Bottom line: a compactor that's down costs money every hour. Confirm the part number, buy genuine for critical components, inspect the shipment, and install by the book. Do the job once, do it right, and get back to work.
